Why I Built AskMyHOA
AskMyHOA helps residents, board members and property managers find clear, citation-backed answers in their community’s governing documents.

Most HOA questions sound simple.
Can I install a fence?
Who is responsible for repairing this area?
Can the HOA increase the assessment?
Am I allowed to rent my home?
The problem is that finding the answer is rarely simple.
The information may be buried inside a declaration, bylaws, rules, policies or amendments. Some documents are more than a hundred pages long. Others were written years ago and use language that is difficult to understand.
Residents often do not know where to look.
Board members and property managers end up answering the same questions repeatedly. Even then, two people may interpret the same rule differently.
This creates confusion, delays and unnecessary conflict.
The Problem Is Not a Lack of Information
Most HOA communities already have the information they need.
It exists inside their governing documents.
The real problem is that the information is difficult to find and even harder to use.
I have seen this firsthand as an HOA board member. A resident may ask a reasonable question, but answering it can require searching through several documents and amendments.
Board members are volunteers. They may not have time to perform this research every time someone asks a question.
Residents may become frustrated while waiting. They may also receive answers without knowing which document or rule supports them.
That is the problem I wanted to solve.
What Is AskMyHOA?
AskMyHOA helps residents, board members and property managers get clear answers from their own HOA documents.
The community uploads its governing documents, such as:
Declarations and CC&Rs
Bylaws
Rules and regulations
Architectural guidelines
Policies
Amendments
A user can then ask a question in normal language.
AskMyHOA searches the community’s documents and provides an answer with references to the relevant source.
Instead of reading an entire document, the user can see the section that may answer the question.
The goal is not just to provide a quick answer. The goal is to show where that answer came from.
Built for Residents and HOA Boards
For residents, AskMyHOA makes HOA documents easier to understand.
They can ask questions without knowing the correct document name, article number or legal terminology.
For board members, it can reduce the time spent searching documents and responding to repeated questions.
It can also help the board provide more consistent information.
For property managers, it can become an additional self-service resource for the communities they manage.
AskMyHOA is especially useful for self-managed and smaller HOAs where board members handle many responsibilities themselves.
What AskMyHOA Does Not Replace
AskMyHOA is not an HOA management platform.
It does not replace accounting, payment processing, violation management or community portals.
It also does not replace the authority of the HOA board, the property manager or an attorney.
Some questions require judgment. Others may involve state law, pending disputes or facts that are not included in the governing documents.
AskMyHOA helps users understand what their documents say. The board still remains responsible for official decisions and interpretations.
Why Citations Matter
An answer without a source can create more questions.
Residents should be able to see which document supports an answer. Board members should also be able to verify the information before relying on it.
That is why AskMyHOA focuses on citation-backed answers.
The documents remain the source of truth.
AskMyHOA simply makes them easier to search, understand and use.
A Simple Goal
AskMyHOA started with a simple idea:
Your HOA documents already contain many of the answers. They should not be so difficult to find.
My goal is to help communities reduce confusion, save time and have better conversations based on their actual governing documents.
This is only the beginning. I will continue sharing practical information about HOA documents, common resident questions and ways communities can use technology more effectively.
